The 2016 WGUK Champions have been crowned

The 37th British Winter Guard Championships, and so the end of 2016 Winter Guard United Kingdom season, took place on Saturday 2nd April at Fenton Manor Leisure Centre in Stoke On Trent.

Once again we had a capacity audience to cheer on the 33 units who provided us with 48 performances - in over 10 hours of fantastic competition and entertainment.

We would firstly like to give our special congratulations to the 2016 Champions:

Mayflower - World Class
Kidsgrove Scouts - Open Class
Mayflower - A Class
Northern Academy - Junior Class
Oracle Cadets - Cadet Class

The day commenced with the World Class and Open Class Preliminaries with Kidsgrove Scouts retaining their lead in the Open Class. This was followed by another very close contest in both the A Class and Junior Championships which took place to determine the 5 A units and the 5 Junior units who would progress to their respective Finals. Special mention to Winter Festival - who have travelled over to the UK from Ireland 4 times this season - who just missed out on an A Class Finals spot by less than half a point!

This year we had 10 units competing in the Cadet Class Championships and once again the standard of Guards in this class really does bode well for the future of our activity, especially considering their young age. Avengers Cadets took 3rd Place with Alliance Antz jumping into 2nd and Oracle Cadets taking their first Champions title.

And so to the four Finals events...

In the Junior Class Finals - Mayflower came 5th, Southern Knights 4th and Alliance were in 3rd Place. There were two strong contenders for the top spot and the in end South West Academy came in 2nd with Northern Academy securing their first Junior Class title.

In the A Class Finals - Oracle were 5th, Spice in 4th, Anchormen in 3rd with Southern Knights in 2nd and in 1st Place, with their second A Class title, Mayflower.

The Open Class Finals saw Avengers in 4th Place, Northern Academy (great to see them back in Open Class) 3rd and then, in a switch from the 2015 results, Southern Knights in 2nd with Kidsgrove Scouts taking their second Open Class title.

In the World Class Final Mayflower bought the stand to the feet as the final performance of the 37th Championships and were crowned World Class Champions.
